Knob & Tube Wiring 101

What is knob and tube wiring?

Knob and tube wiring is an early electrical wiring system that consists of 2 main components:

Knobs: ceramic or porcelain insulators that are used to secure the wires to the studs and joints of a home.

Tubes: ceramic or porcelain tubes that allow wires to pass through walls, ceilings, and floors without coming into direct contact with combustible materials.

This system is known for its open wiring design, which allowed electricians to easily install and maintain it. However, this same open design also presents significant risks to modern homes.

The risks of knob & tube wiring:‘

Though knob and tube wiring was a functional system when first introduced, it has a number of inherent safety risks that make it unsuitable for todays electrical needs.

  1. Insufficient power capacity- risk of overheating or fires
  2. Degraded insulation- breaks down over time
  3. Lack of grounding- lacks a grounding wire, making it not compatible with 3 pronged plugs, and higher shock risk
  4. Non-compliance with modern codes- you may have difficulty with insurance companies insuring your home with K&T wiring.
